The HP 5315B is a universal counter, measuring signals over a range from 0.1 Hz to 100 MHz. The 5315B measures frequency, period, time interval, time interval average, time interval holdoff (delay), and ratio. A totalize function with manual or external gating is also provided. All measurements except totalize are displayed in scientific notation with up to eight digits of resolution.

Two independent input channels provide time interval measurements. Each input channel has an attenuator (X1, X20), trigger slope selector, trigger level and sensitivity control, and AC-DC coupling. A switchable low-pass filter on Channel A and three-state trigger lights are also provided.

Option 003, 1 GHz third or "C" input channel for the 5315B, provides frequency measurements from 50 MHz to 1 GHz. The input sensitivity is 15 mV for frequencies between 50 and 650 MHz, and 75 mV for frequencies between 650 MHz and 1 GHz. The Channel C is a 50 Ω input with a dynamic input range of 1 Vrms. The input is prescaled by 10 to achieve a 1 GHz frequency range.

  • Dynamic range: 60 mV - 5 Vp-p 0 to 10 MHz, 150 mV - 5 Vp-p 10 to 100 MHz
  • Impedance: 500 kΩ nominal shunted by <70 pF
• Period range: 10 ns to 10⁵ s
• Time interval range: 100 ns to 10⁵ s
• Time inteval average range: 0 ns to 10⁵ s
• Time interval delay (holdoff): Front panel gate time knob inserts a variable delay of nominally 500 µs to 20 ms between Start (Channel A) and enabling of Stop (Channel B)
• Ratio range: 0.1 Hz to 100 MHz
• Totalize
  • Range (manual or external gating): 0 to 100 MHz
  • A gated by B: Totalizes input A between two events of B. The instrument must be reset to make new measurements. Gate opens on A slope, and closes on B slope
• Time base frequency: 10 MHz
• Gate time: Continuously variable, nominally from 60 ms to 10 s or 1 period of the input, whichever is longer
• Sample rate: Up to 5 readings per second nominal except in time interval mode, where it is continously variable nominally from 4 readings per second to 1 reading every 10 seconds via Gate Time control
